Basque State Cities Story

I. For the Dawn of Time
Once the ice ages receded and the main human groups roamed the humid valleys on the Cantabrian Sea, the lands we now call Euskal Herria have been by now a refuge. In the caves of Santimamiñe, Ekain, Isturitz, and Aitzbitarte, anonymous fingers still left bison, horses, and symbols that also manage to resonate now.

They had been hunter-gatherer peoples, adapted to rugged mountains, swift rivers, and coasts rich in fish.

In excess of millennia, these teams settled, cultivated the land, lifted livestock, and fashioned communities that, although various, shared cultural characteristics that could outlast overall empires.

II. The Vascones, Caristii, Varduli, and Autrigones
During the Iron Age, Roman chroniclers talked about numerous peoples:
• Vascones in Navarre and areas of Gipuzkoa along with the French Basque Place (Iparralde)
• Caristii in Biscay and Álava
• Varduli in Gipuzkoa
• Autrigones in western Biscay
These weren't centralized kingdoms, but somewhat tribal confederations. They practiced livestock farming, transhumant herding, and Atlantic trade.
Rome arrived, but under no circumstances absolutely subdued them. The mountains, forests, and native resistance intended that Romanization was minimal: streets, bridges, agricultural villas… even so the language and several customs continued on their own path.

III. Between Empires: The Early Center Ages
Once the slide of Rome, these lands lay involving two worlds: the Frankish plus the Visigothic.

For the duration of this time, a name emerged that might resonate for centuries: Vasconia.

• In Navarre, the Vascones structured them selves all over Pamplona.

• While in the Northern Basque Nation (Iparralde), the Duchy of Vasconia stretched in the Garonne River to the Pyrenees.

• In Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava, area lineages maintained autonomy amidst the mountains and valleys.

The Vikings attacked the Coastline; the Franks tried to control the Pyrenean passes; the Visigoths and afterwards the Muslims clashed to the Ebro frontier.

Even so the Basque communities survived, adapting without having losing their id.

IV. The Kingdom of Pamplona / Kingdom of Navarre
Inside the 9th century, the Kingdom of Pamplona was born, which might later become the Kingdom of Navarre.

For hundreds of years, it was a vital player in peninsular and European politics.

• Navarre was the middle of electricity.

• Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, and Álava had been associated with the kingdom at diverse occasions.
